Kelly and Kelley ... Local Libertarians Seek Offices

Update...A BatBlog apology for omitting  Russell Brooksbank who will be the Libertarian candidate  for 9th dist. House of Representatives...
******************************************************************************************

Kelly Khuri incumbent Clark County councilwoman has announced her intentions to switch from the local GOP to the Libertarian Party and will enter the C.C. coroners race this fall as a Libertarian. As well the local Libertarian's announced that their party chair Kelley Curran would run for a Clark Co. council at large seat in November that are currently held by Ms. Khuri and two Democrats Kevin Vissing and Joe Hubbard. Ms. Curran will face 3 Rep. and 3 Dem. in the fall election which includes the 2 Dem. incumbents for the 3 at large seats...

The BatBlog applauds Kelly and Kelley for stepping
forward and giving local voters another choice in the general election. Both are capable individuals who we feel will champion the best interests of local taxpayers and voters. Particularly being conservative watchdogs with how our tax dollars are spent and not bowing to special interests and attempting to make sure the people are protected from wasteful spending and pet projects.

While it is advantageous for voters to have several choices, Kelly and Kelley face a huge struggle ahead of them. The two party system is deeply entrenched and a powerful factor facing candidates other than Dem. or Rep. This power was never more evident in Ms. Khuri's recent primary reelection bid where the local GOP leadership turned their back on supporting her even though she had been an excellent public servant during her first term. The lack of support  from party bosses ultimately led to Ms. Khuri's defeat in the primary.

The only trepidation The BatBlog has is Ms. Khuri's choice to run for coroner it seems to us that she would be more suited to a Commissioner, council or some other executive type position. She will face an uphill battle against two well known funeral directors with strong family name recognition ties. None the less and while I personally have never voted for a Libertarian, I would have no problem voting for both of these intelligent, young women who I personally believe would be outstanding public servants as Ms. Khuri has already proven herself.

The BatBlog encourages all Clark Co. voters to give Kelly and Kelley a close look at their candidacies in this November's general election...

  1. No chance to win. If anything, they will affect the race in favor of another candidate. Most likely a democrat.

    Thanks, HT.

  3. Kelley mentioned on the chatter, among other things, that Khuri would be a champion for property rights.

Excuse me, but what does that have to do with the coroner's office. I will never vote for someone who is merely seeking a platform for their agenda.

  4. Personally I think Kelly would be better served to try an office other than coroner, but of course that's her decision. I think she would be diligent and do the best job to her ability if elected, but I think voters fairly or unfairly relate coroners to funeral directors.

IMO she will have a difficult time over coming that stigma plus the disadvantage of being a 3rd party in what is traditionally a 2 party field.

But I admire her determination to attempt to overcome these obstacles and hope everyone at least gives her message a chance...

  6. I didn't say she would be a champion for property rights in her role as coroner.

Arguably though, since you said it, your income and your property subject to tax is very much your property. If she runs the office efficiently, she would still be championing our property rights, our rights to keep our property.

  7. Hahaha, bikerdude.

KK looks all sweet and innocent in her pic. She's the one you gotta watch out for!

  8. The coroner's job has an increasing budget due to increased drug over doses, suicide's etc. Its pretty clear cut, a certain amount per death is needed.

  9. I don't want Kelly khuri coming to investigate none of my killings. That would be unfair and stuff. We sacrifice turkeys and chickens on a regular basis....I don't want her snooping around.

  11. Kelly Khuri is the best candidate for ANY job ----- she is HONEST. Far too many of those in office today are just plain greedy and corrupt. Kelly would definitely "clean up Dodge"!! Go Kelly! (and Kelley, too!)

  12. Neither will ever get my vote. Libertarians and there extreme views and unwillingness to negotiate or meet in the middle or work together makes them a no go for me.

  13. Unwillingness to negotiate or meet in the middle or work together? I would say, "have you met us?" But meeting us isn't even necessary. Do you even local blogosphere, bro?

Kelly and I working together over the years represents working together right there as she remained loyal to her former party. Russell, others and I, among Libertarians, have worked with Republicans, Democrats and Independents on several issues including RDA, the redevelopment of Old Clarksville, the threat to Southern Indiana Animal Rescue, etc. I was one of the original instigators of the anti-referendum effort which was nonpartisan.

I'm a current member of the Jeffersonville Urban Enterprise Association. If I had such extreme views and was unable to work with others, that would be impossible. It's not a role for an extreme purist libertarian, but I feel I'm able to do good by keeping the position.

Though unions are associated with Dems/liberals and some say they're incompatible with libertarianism, Russell is a proud Teamster. Due to his ability to work with others and be a leader, the Teamsters have endorsed him previously and supported the effort to inform Old Clarksville residents about their rights, and will presumably continue to support his efforts.

Your statement is either forgivably ignorant or intentionally dishonest.

  14. I would bet that if someone asked you to what their "extreme views" were, that you couldn't name one!

  15. This presidential election cycle has shown probably more than ever before the inadequacies of the election process and to a certain extent the two party system. Both the presumptive Dem. and Rep. candidates are highly unpopular to a large part of their own party members.

It will be difficult for this old traditional process and system to be changed but give the Libertarians credit for providing voters with additional choices, which may in the future bring about changes that will more efficiently help us select our leaders...
