Big Chicken ??? What's He Afraid Of ???

Reportedly Jeffersonville City councilman Matt (Lapdog) Owen told the other Republican candidates for City Council seats not to show up for last evenings debates sponsored by the League of Women voters. Not to waste their time...

Granted  these debates for local positions aren't  earth shattering events but it is a slap in the face of a respected organization like the League of Women voters who put in their time and effort to put on this event and a disservice to local voters who took time to attend.

One wonders why is "Lapdog" Owen is such a big chicken, or is he merely relaying a message from his master and GOP chairman Jamey Noel ??? Lapdog hasn't shown much leadership or promise in his capacity as city councilman and in the BatBlog's opinion would be a poor choice to replace Noel as party chair as has been rumored.
GOP chickens

Watcha scared of Matt ??? and why would the other candidates listen to "Lapdog" ???

If this is true an organized boycott the BatBlog believes voters should follow suit and not "waste their time" either, voting for the Republican candidates who didn't attend the event...Especially Matt "Lapdog" Owen....

  1. It would not have hurt the Republican candidates to attend, but they have some point. The local League has failed to recruit and maintain members and especially leaders that are not Democrats. Independent Roger Baylor has been critical of their organizing of the New Albany mayoral debate.

There is a perception the League is a Democrat organization. They needed to do serious outreach to others to combat that image and earn the label of nonpartisan but have not.

  2. The Republicand city council candidates NOT showing up is really unusual.
In the 'Olde Days", the L of W V's was controlled by the Republicans. What gives with this?

  3. Maybe, the Republic city council members had to attend a soccer match ?

  4. Would a city council candidate would Fail To Appear because 'Matt Owen' told them not to go? There has to be something else to this story. It's gotta be soccer. Also, I thought that Matt Owen had pretty good attendance at council meetings and wanted to be Jamey Noel's replacement? He wants to continue his political career and get away from this "desert" of a council. He apparently is working toward a leadership position, so attending the meeting was important. At the least, the current city council members and candidates would want to hear what the mayoral candidates had to say.
It had to be a soccer match they attended instead.

  5. Callie Jahn is an excellent candidate for the Jeffersonville City Council in the 3rd District. She has a great future! She will be able to work with Mayor Moore on Jeffersonville's great future! I understand that she will be taking a brand new look at the temporary closing of the city court, the council unusual overstepping its functions as the Legislative Branch, the soccer spending scandal, the questionable legality of the Parks Authority, the plants maintenance scandal gig, etc.

  7. I personally feel that the lack of attendance by the Republican candidates was in poor taste and embarrassing. If it was so unimportant, why did the Mayor and his supporters attend. I could not attend because of a previously scheduled speaking engagement. Tanya, my wife attended in my stead and was embarrassed by the lack of Republicans present.

I do feel that the League is primarily a democratic organization. I observed that when I ran 4 years ago. My question is, Why would you not want to go and put out your message to an organization that might think differently than you? The candidates probably already have the republican voters on their side. Why not go into different venues and spread your message and find common ground with others?

Just the night before, CNN had the Republican Presidential Debates. We all know that CNN is a Democratic leaning network, much as Fox News is more Republican leaning. Did the presidential candidates chose not to attend that debate because they mostly have the wrong audience?

If you are a candidate for an office then fight for that office. Use every venue to get your message out. All of the voters need to know the candidates and their points of view. We can not have an informed electorate if we pick and chose who we want to send our message to. If elected do you only serve the Republicians in the county or do you serve all citizens in the county?

I welcome speaking at venues where all points of views are voiced. I turn down no invitation to speak and do not care what party is represented.

Leadership is not shown by pandering to a group of like thinkers. It is by facing groups with different ideas and mind sets, engaging them in constructive dialogue, exchanging new and creative ideas and putting these ideas to work.

Finally, If the league is primarily made up of Democrats one must ask why. As far as I know there is no language in their bylaws that exclude a different party's members from joining.

  8. Thanks for the comments Rick...I agree it was embarrassing and uncalled for lack of participation by the GOP candidates. While the LWV may be predominately Democratic they did take their time to sponsor this event for the benefit of voters and the boycott shows a lack of leadership and snobbery.

One has to know as well that the recent success of the GOP here locally isn't from an influx of Republican voters into this area. A lot of the Republicans around here used to be Democrats, as well many Democrats cross over for various reasons.

If Owen called for this "boycott" it is just another example of his immaturity and lack of leadership qualities. His win in his initial run for office was gimmicky with the publicity of his young age allowing him to win. He has shown no propensity for leadership or good judgement other than becoming Noel's "LapDog"

He will not get my vote and the BatBlog encourages others to follow suit....

  9. Rick Stephenson, you hit the nail on the head with your post. Thanks for saying this!!! I voted for Mr. Owen in the last Council race. He has lost my vote.

If so she needs to resign from the race.

  14. Mike Moore was the only Republican. He completely changed the schedule. Said he had to watch the UofL football game, so he wanted to go first. Because of that, half the crowd left after the mayors debate. As we know, it's always best to save the main show for last. Didn't happen.

  15. 1) This was a forum/debate for candidates running in a different municipality than where it it was being held.

    2) 12 of the candidates are running in districts. You mean to tell me that you think it was valuable for the candidates running in a district race to spend one of the last 45 to 50 evenings before the election speaking to a crowd of people who likely already have their minds made up who probably don't live in the district anyway? If there were 10 candidates there and 100 others, one can assume that at least 70 of those people were invited by candidates. If there were 100 attendees total, divide that by 6. That's roughly 17 individuals from each district in Jeffersonville, assuming it's an even split, and that's assuming that none of those individuals were students/professors at Ivy Tech just popping in the kill time between classes.

Have you ever thought that maybe these candidates had other plans for the night? Give the Republicans some credit; they've been killing it these past few elections. Maybe they know what they're doing. Maybe, just maybe, attending speaking events in a different municipality, especially when you're a district candidate, makes absolutely zero sense for one of your last 45-50 evenings before the election. I'm no political strategist, but maybe standing on a stage and answering a couple of questions doesn't ACTUALLY turn out votes on Election Day.

    1. I don't disagree, that few votes will be gained at the event. The fact a Jeffersonville event was in Sellersburg is no big deal with modern transportation.
The evening news was there. So by not being there, misses a chance for exposure .

  18. Where it was, how many attended, how many votes to gained is irrelevant. The fact is this organization sponsored an event for these candidates and they didn't bother to show up. These candidates go to all kinds of events pandering for money and votes, there's no reason they couldn't attend.

The negative publicity will hurt them as I want no part of any candidate afraid to stand up to his or her opponent face to face...and I have little respect for a candidate who has to be told what to do and when to do it....If "Lapdog" Owen was afraid to go fine, but let the other candidates do want they want and attend if they wish if they choose to...

You would think the lesser known candidates would want the opportunity to get their message across....

  19. Just because the GOP has had some recent success doesn't mean you don't have to work for your votes and talk to the people. That false sense of security and Tom Galligan's leadership is what brought Democrat's to record lows here recently...

  20. Blog is about Republican candidates for city council taking a pass on participating in the Democrat women's group candidate forum event. Even if the name is League of Women Voters, everyone in it is Democrat, so it might as well be the Democrat women club. Kevin Vissing takes a shot at Mayor Moore for requesting mayor forum to be scheduled before the uncontested council forum - why shouldn't it be? WTF is Kevin complaining about? He should be happy.

    1. I took no shot at the mayor. I just gave you the facts. The scheduled event had district candidates first, at large second, mayor candidates last. Best for last, right?
Council candidates were given their questions days earlier, but the mayor candidates were supposed to be spontaneous questions unknown to them until asked. Moore complained that he wanted questions beforehand, and was allowed his request. Once he arrived, wanted to go first, so he could watch the game. No shots here, just facts.

  22. 4 years ago, the fear of the canal, and hatred of the annexation brought people out in droves.
Last year, Republicans won because of dissatisfaction of Obama, which reverberated down to the local levels.
This election will be unaffected by national politics.
It's possible, many who voted republican recently are dismayed that national republicans have failed them.
Also our bone headed governor hasn't helped local republicans either. So, everyone is on their own.

    1. People were afraid of the canal. That sums up Jeffersonville quite well.

Me personally, I fear fires, floods, murderers. But in Jeffersonville they fear canals.

No wonder this city can never catch up.

    2. Sorry, I wasn't clear. They were told in mailed letters that they would be on the hook for about $13,000 per household if Galligan built the canal. Thus the fear of building the canal. Actually, Galligan had a Texas developer that was interested in developing the canal district. After elected, Moore sent a city official to texas or was sending, and pulled back, not allowing him to go.

    Gulp.
The $500 would be nice for providing the information, but the tone seems so daunting that if you pound his/her face, providing you the name could make that person potentially be exposed to be charged with "assisting" in any potential criminal battery if that is the intent.

    Who knows who he/she is,
however, I found an old Facebook site
and this internet site looks it has not been updated recently:

If this is what you need, just sent the $500

  26. I did find this on an Oracle story from
    Mar 03, 2014
Jeff, New Albany, Clarksville Among Indiana’s Top Debtor Communities

"The cities of Jeffersonville and New Albany are among Indiana’s top 20 communities for municipal debt, while the Town of Clarksville ranked 25th, according to data available from the Indiana Transparency Portal."
According to the state data, Jeffersonville has nearly $191.2 million in debt, or $4,254.27 per citizen; New Albany’s debt is $127.2 million, or $3,497.74 per citizen; and Clarksville’s debt is $84,358,962, or $3,883.21 per citizen.

Knot Standard Jeffersonville and New Albany rank 10th and 17th, respectively, for total debt among Indiana’s municipalities.

In each case, a substantial portion of the money owed relates to sanitary sewer improvements required by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, including $127.2 million (66.5 percent of the total debt) for Jeffersonville, $61.6 million (48.5 percent) for New Albany and $58.1 million (68.9 percent) for Clarksville.

This is in direct violation of The Indiana GOP State Committee! Will Mini Me aka Matt Owen carry on that tradition if hand picked by the GodFather to replace him IF he ever resigns as he stated he would when he became Sheriff?

"This revision contains all changes approved as of January 21, 2015 RULES OF THE INDIANA REPUBLICAN STATE COMMITTEE Rule 3-41. Meetings of the County Committee (with all elected and appointed committeemen and vice committeemen invited) should be convened at least twice annually."
