It won't be too long until the 2018 election season will be upon us. The candidates have filed and there are some interesting races stacking up in both the primaries and the November general election.
First up that we'll look at is a GOP primary race... a race that really caught the attention of The BatBlog is the seat in Indiana house Dist.71 between Dr. Kevin Burke and Matt " Lapdog" Owen...On paper this looks like a no brainer for voters ...a we'll respected physician with years of service in the public health field against the former cupcake icer for a downtown restaurant who parlayed a gimmick mayoral candidacy into a city council seat...but this is politics and the obvious and most intelligent choice doesn't always win.
The BatBlog is actually surprised GOP chair Jamey Noel would allow Owen off of his short leash to run for a big boy office like the In.state House of Representatives where life experiences in our opinion are dramatically more important than showing up for parades and ribbon cuttings...but if there is one thing you can expect in politics it is the unexpected..
.
Nevertheless the smart choice , really the only choice is Dr. Burke but Owen has been able to garner votes in the past mostly on name recognition not on actual performance...So let the games begin and we'll continue to look at the other races in the coming weeks...
As always "Stay Vigilant"...
There are two D 2018 primary candidates in District 71.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you know about them?
Will try and analyze ALL the main races in the coming weeks...

ReplyDeleteHouse District 71
The governor and JN
have both endorsed Matt Owen
already. It is over in the R Primary.
Now, who are the two D's running?
If it's "over" like you say then the Indiana house will be recipients of some great cupcakes!!!๐๐
DeleteBat Blog Reports First!
ReplyDeleteThe others are laggards once again.
The two D's are:
Dr. Rita Fleming
and
Jason Schnatter.
Ooops...typing and thinking of Pizza! It is Jason Schlatter vs Fleming.
DeleteYou are short changing Owen he was promoted all the way up to busboy!
ReplyDeleteThat would be HEAD busboy!
DeleteI'm surprised Noel would even let Burke run against his boy Owen.
ReplyDeleteThe county chair really doesn't have a say on who runs and who doesn't unless you didn't vote for the party you are running for in the previous primary. If you did, it's not really a "let him" conversation.
ReplyDeleteAs it would have it, Dr. Burke was pursued by the D's to run. That is until they found out he voted R the last primary. The story goes Dr. Burke tried to file as a D but since he voted in the R primary, the D Chair (Mrs. Miller) would not sign off on him running. In turn, he went to Indy and filed as an R. It was only after he filed did he inform Noel he was running.
Another strong candidate who met all party requirements wanted to run republican but was warned to stay out.
ReplyDeleteThis happens more often than you would think. If the party chair is crossed they will withhold support (moral and financial) and urge the party caucus to follow suit...
DeleteWe as voters are sometimes limited to choices that are in favor or buddies to the chairmen....
The Libertarians will select local candidates in March. There could be additional Libertarian and Independent candidates added over several months, and word is Indiana Greens are looking to get back in the mix this year.
ReplyDeleteBat Blog District 71 "Insider Fun" Outlook
DeleteMatt Owen wins easily in the R Primary.
The D Primary is up for grabs with Dr. Rita Fleeming
the early favorite. The unions might endorse Jason Schlatter,
but would be wise to wait for the General to endorse anyone.
Third party candidates split the D nominee the worst.
The R Chair should encourage third party, fringe
candidates to jump in! The R nominee wins
in a walk in the General.
Whomever gets the NRA endorsement,
then his/her vote will be much stronger. :) :) :)
Third party candidates have no chance of winning, all they do is muddy the waters. Who was the republican that was told not to run?
ReplyDeleteScott Hawkins. He would have beat Owen.
DeleteLol. Muddy the waters, change the debate, make supposed heir apparents actually run...all kinds of fun stuff.
DeleteOnly 72 Days-Not much time!
ReplyDeleteNary a single "door to door" candidate yet on my street.
Nary a single political sign anywhere. Some "social media" offerings.
Several donations probably made however and several candidate political party gatherings and individual gatherings. Tuesday, May 8th, for the Primary and that
is COMING VERY fast. Candidates have a lot of campaigning to do.
Seventy-two days is not much time to adequately accomplish
their goals to obtain the various nominations!

ReplyDelete2018 should be a GREAT political year in Clark County!
I look forward to the fun watching and the cool frustration
levels that we will observe! Some social media "posts 'n boasts"
are already neat to dissect.
ReplyDeleteHoosier Taxpayer, it has been noticed that the picture of John perkiness was not smiling for a while and has STARTED AGAIN and that the nice state rep race thread has vanished!!!
It is the Russians hacking the Bat Blog?
