Save Our Schools !!!

There was a passionate crowd of parents, residents, and politicians at last night's GCCS school board meeting, where Dr. Melin laid out the plans to potentially replace Jeffersonville's two downtown elementary schools with a new centrally located downtown school. Most of those attending disagreed with the Melin new school plan and were very vocal in doing so and made some very good points of why Spring Hill and Maple should remain open.

While The BatBlog admires the determination and passion of those against the new school plan they also need to face reality, Melin and his "rubber stamp" school board are bound and determined to close these two historic but aging schools... and won't budge no matter how reasonable the opposition's  points might be on why the schools should remain open. Jeffersonville City Councilman Dustin White who represents constituents in the effected downtown area  made some particularly good and valid comments about saving the schools.

The BatBlog has some serious doubt's itself about the "fuzzy"math and dollars Melin spouts as reasoning for closing the schools but with a jelly fish spined board squarely in his pocket one has to realize Melin has the power to do as he wishes. Mayor Mike Moore's plan to compromise and build a new school while not a perfect answer for the opposition...it is at this point the only viable choice left on the table. It is a better alternative for downtown kids than being bused miles away and better for continued downtown development.

The BatBlog deeply sympathizes with those opposed to closing Maple and Spring Hill but considering the alternative let them ...

Build that School !!! Build that School !!! Build that School !!!

  1. H-T, that is an excellent summation!
Summary Judgement is hereby granted on your very sound and accurate motion!

  2. Melin thinks he is King of Clark County education and the school board make up his court jesters...

  3. The new school proposal is a slick political move , it attempts to throw the blame on to the voters instead of Melin if the funding fall through. Melin knows voters will vote down any referendum and then if they do he can say we tried but the voters turned it down. Shifting blame clears both Melin and Moore from any fault of closing Maple and Spring Hill which was the plan all along.

  4. Yes, truly a "slick" political move. The people deserve to be heard. The COWARDS on the school board refuse to even hold a community meeting and hear from the people affected. There are other alternatives BUT Melin is stubborn and a control freak. This may all have been one big ploy to get people to approve $15 million for a new school ---- tell them the schools are closing; get people upset; and then send the Mayor in to "save the day" with a plan for a new school. And get the poor people to think this is their only choice. What if these people just decide to take their children OUT of Greater Clark and send them elsewhere. Melin will be in worse shape ever. The debt keeps rising and the enrollment keeps declining. Solution: Fire Melin

    1. No I just think is the only option available and I agree it is a "slick" move to deflect the blame. Mike Moore has done the right thing and his motives are for the best interests of downtown residents and the continued development in downtown Jeff, he knows Melin has all the control but also knows we need a school downtown...

The next interesting move is how Melin handles the funding for this... if he throws it to referendum we will know that he really doesn't care about the downtown having a school or not...he knows voters will reject a referendum so stay tuned...

As for the school board they are as useless as tits on a boar hog no use anyone appealing to them for help...has anyone checked ?? do they have a pulse ???

  6. If any of you think you can do a better job on the School Board, run for it. The people of Clark County spoke when they voted for them and not for the losers. Get over it or change it. All the complaining and name calling is really useless.

  7. It doesn't pay enough, my grand kids are in another system (which we are well satisfied with) and I just call it like I see it... and it is everyone's right to complain if they see fit...I would also do a better job as I would represent my constituents wishes and their children not the superintendent's every whim...

  8. But that is your opinion. I know several people on that board and they are very independent thinkers. Just because they don't agree with you or whoever does not mean they are just rubber-stamping Melin's every whim. It's not like this position pays a fortune, I know for a fact a couple on the Board who make over $100,000 on their jobs and are really sacrificing giving up their free time for the schools and kids. Talk about being a follower, from all the comments repeated on here over and over its like some of you cannot think on your own. I guarantee if you were on the Board you would get bitch and moans just like everyone does. I have never seen a Board that everyone was happy with. I still guarantee there are many more people who are satisfied with the overall performance of the Board then those 20 or 30 who are constantly being critical, but majority rules and that is why we have the Board we do. Again, run for it, win it, or shut it.

    1. I was being generous, but everyone knows Alice has a few followers. Problem is when you follow someone who is a bitter loser and has nothing else in her life to focus on except bashing the board and Melin, you end up very disappointed.

  9. And just for the record, you are right they can complain away. But name calling (as I was getting from "anonymous" on other posts is just ridiculous.) I know who it is, and you would think after Karma biting her in the ass a few years ago in a real devastating way, she would watch herself. Just saying.

  10. I hope the fanatics trying to stop the plan to build a new school get the most signatures to stop the project. Can you imagine the look on their faces when they win and realize they have no downtown school? CLASSIC

  11. Lisa, you don't even go here and I doubt you know anyone on that board. Give it a few posts and she won't know any of them. She's constantly flip flopping.

  12. I couldn't roll my eyes harder if I tried.

  13. No fanatics are needed to stop the plan. 500 rural voters who don't want to subsidize a shiny new downtown school when they're stuck with an outdated one with no programming will be sufficient to do it.
500 voters who can't afford a tax increase will be sufficient to do it.

When it gets to competing petitions, you can be sure the school corporation won't provide nearly the organization, marketing, energy and plain deception as they did for the last round.

  14. Psycho one,

As far as that Karma crack, that wasn't me posting on the other thread or previously on this one. There are enough people that think very little of you, and even the ones that are new to the local blogosphere can catch on quick enough, that you can't be so confident who it is telling you about yourself on any given occassion.

    But I see you, bitch.
    And so does Jesus.
