  1. At one time there was a bakery called Everfresh in Youngstown near Taylor's but not sure it was there when the picture was taken.

  4. If you look very closely I think you can see Not Honest Mike Hutt in the picture ....he was even old in the 50's

  6. I remember as a kid in Krogers as well...I don't know about Bush Kellers but now that you mention sporting goods there was Cotton Wood's sporting goods in the corner that isn't even finished in the picture just past Woolworth's...that was in the early 60's...

  7. My memory jogged.....you are correct. My favorite store was Cotton Woods. Isn't that where all the fish tanks, fishing gear were sold?

  8. This picture was taken before my cognitive years but I can help a bit.
Cotton's was at the far west end, behind Taylor's, around the corner.
(didn't move to the middle until sometime in the 60's)
Have NO idea what "National" was.
(or the store to it's left)

I have a partial list of what was there in the 60's. (left to right)
    (Cotton Wood Sporting Goods)
    Taylor's (drugs)
    Ever-Fresh (bakery)
    Swiss (cleaners)
    Keller's (hardware)
    Kroger (grocery)
    Firestone (probably later, not sure)
    Woolworth (5&10)
    Red Goose Shoes
    (? not sure)
    / empty corner /
    Keith's (men's clothing)
    Bacon's

That's the best I've got and I won't guarantee that all of those were there when that pic was taken.

  9. Thanks RF your info is pretty right on. You jogged my memory on Kellers Hardware.

I remember the shoe store but wasn't sure of the name and I didn't know that Cotton Wood's was earlier near Taylor's or have forgotten...

You also jogged my memory on Keith's clothing store...also remember the far corner where New Washington Bank is was Youngstown Bowling and there was a card shop maybe Hallmark? and a smoke shop that were all later on from when the picture was taken...

Really curious on the National I've asked some old timers and no one seems to remember it...

  11. "Really curious on the National I've asked some old timers and no one seems to remember it…"
Well … ya know I had to look.
Found a National Wallpaper and Paint Mart but I don't know if that's it. (given in 1948 @ 422 Spring Street)
"You jogged my memory on Kellers Hardware."
Yeah … the Bush-Keller, mentioned earlier, was in New Albany. (340 Vincennes)
    Keller's was originally @ 412 Spring Street.

"I remember the shoe store but wasn't sure of the name"
    The name was Vincent's Shoes.

"..also remember the far corner where New Washington Bank is was Youngstown Bowling and there was a card shop maybe Hallmark? "
Youngstown Lanes and Senmoore Card & Stationery (Hallmark)

"USE'd ta be a cigar shop...right on the end, 'round the corner from Taylors."
That's where Cotton Wood was originally. Baker's Barber Shop (later near Key Market)

    I also found:
    Hellmanns (women's and children's clothes)
    State Farm Insurance (Jim Utley)
Spin Record Shop (wasn't around very long)

  12. I believe Moneypenney came in the Keller's location after it shutdown dude...and I vaguely remember that barbershop as well...thanks Dude, RF and everyone for their input...

Old Jeff and Clark Co. history is very interesting to me brings back a quieter, simpler time....

and I think me and dude discussed old local fishing lakes at one time on here or the Chatter...remember Mull's and Finneymere lakes both right off Hwy. 62

  17. Youngstown shopping center was probably the earliest dedicated shopping area in this area. Early on it included Krogers, Taylor's drugstore, Woolworth's, Bacon's, Everfresh Bakery and a National food store ....later on it would include Cotton Wood's sporting goods, Keith's clothing a S&H green stamp store a bowling alley Youngstown lanes (where New Washington Bank is today.)
