In this highly technical society there are multiple ways of reading and accessing sites that try to block and sell their content. The BatBlog had a post several years back detailing how to view this blocked material...we won't reproduce it here but there are several options.
Our contention is that internet content was meant to be uncensored and free. Web sites are receiving advertising dollars for their sites and by limiting readers they will be reducing their advertisement revenue potential as site views go down, but that is their business decision.
It didn't work once and it won't work again as there are too many other "Free" outlets for local news and let's be honest The Snooze and Tribune lags behind most outlets and even some blogs with their up to date news stories...They have some good young writers and it's a shame that some of their work won't be seen by some due to this money grab....
The BatBlog will always remain free, and we will continue to check out the N/T but we won't be paying for it....

Yes clearing your browsing history is one of several ways to keep viewing the articles. The thing I don't like is their bait and switch tactic. They show the article heading but attempt to block it when you click on it.

Here is another issue I've seen. A buddy of mine actually pays a subscription so he lets me use his login (start the investigation LOL). Anyway with a paid subscription shouldn't all the garbage ads that cover the page everytime you visit be eliminated ? I always thought you paid to avoid the ads ? The paper was always a joke and the website is no better.

I'm sympathetic to the need to pay the bills, but it just pisses people off. Seems like half the comments on the paper's Facebook page is people bitching they can't read the article that was shared. It's a resented tease.
ReplyDeleteThey'll have to get better at the online advertising and/or produce such a great hardcopy people will still pay for that and, therefore it will continue to be valuable to advertisers.
I've had issues with the N/T site loading pages even before the pay for view started....

I must be a sucker I suppose. I think the N&T does a great job covering local stories and at least from my experience most of the reporters do a good job of being neutral. They do at least attempt to get both sides. They can't report a "side" if the person doesn't return their call. Yes, you have to call back PROMPTLY. That's how news cycles work!

I don't understand why we expect ads to cover the cost so that we can get a product for free? If you want the product, then pay for it. I guess I just don't understand the mindset behind news being "free". You pay for cable to get their non-stop news.
I want a local news option to stick around and I value the N&T content much more than CJ!
