The Right Thing to Do - Jeffersonville City Council

The BatBlog has been highly critical of the Jeffersonville City council in the past , and rightfully so. Things may be changing though, and congratulations are in order to this council particularly Dustin White who championed the new ordinance that separates the council as the City's  Park's authority...  For the N/T story CLICK HERE

This was the right thing to do. Our country was set up and thrives on checks and balances in government. As it was before this ordinance, the council was acting with both executive and legislative powers, with no separation  that is essential to democratic government.

I might take my ball and go home !!!
Of course the dissenters (the vote was 5-4) led by Ed "Moe" Zastawny didn't want to give up their exclusive , dictatorial powers over the parks department.  Moe said giving the people majority power over the Park's was "a step backward"...Gee Moe, maybe you should move to Moscow and be a city councilmen over there. Moe must have forgotten the first three words of our Constitution "We the People." Power to the people is the foundation to which the entire Constitution depends.

The new Park's authority will be made up of 5 appointees from the mayor's office and 4 from the City council. Hopefully the new authority will reverse the trend on foolish, unwanted, spending like the obscene amount directed toward a soccer field...

The amazing thing about the vote is that four councilpersons (Moe, Gill, Samuels, and Hawkins who voted against) didn't see the conflict of interests and bad government the former Authority created. Makes you wonder about their political agenda and beliefs.

Once again congratulations and thanks to the members(Owen, Jahn, White, Maples,Webb) led by  Mr. White who voted this in and returned this power to the people of Jeffersonville...

  2. The BatBlog is cautiously optimistic about this new council. With the break up of the anti-Moore coalition Mike "Mr.Green Jeans" Smith and Connie "I don't like the mayor" Sellers retired and who along with Moe, Gill and Samuels made things difficult for political reasons. This council at least so far has shown some very promising potential to do the right thing...

Let's hope someone can now step up and save the taxpayers some money with the City provided healthcare issue...

  3. I think most Jeff residents support this move except the council members who have to give up control

  4. Why would anyone want the mayor in charge of our parks? Remember that his handling of the walking bridge delayed the opening by months and had people in Louisville asking what the hell was going on over here.

  5. Dude, you gotta get up the hyperlink game and attribute the writer.

....in a recent piece on the council by Elizabeth Beilman.

    At the least HT.

    Step your game up. ;)

    End quote

The delay was caused by listening to residents concerns and acting on them.
To me, that's what we need in the parks board.

  7. You're right Matthew and I usually do link to the N/T...my bad I'll change it when I get home tonight...

Elizabeth is an awesome writer by the way...

Also I expect the N/T to hyperlink the "award winning" BatBlog when I out scoop them....

  8. Anon. try reading closely the mayor will appoint 5 members to the new board, the council 4...the mayor doesn't control it per se.....

Don't you believe in the Constitution and separation of powers ???

  9. Absolutely. I just said Moore shouldn't be in charge.

And Woo, the lighting was just fine. It would have made the path uniform from side to side. And, nobody lives close enough to the path that it should matter. And the changes were certainly not worth the months of delays and making us look incompetent.

  10. He's not in charge... the new board will create their own plans /projects and the City council will still have control over the financing aspect... and I believe Woo is correct the lighting didn't measure up to the concerns of residents and the lighting was changed to conform with the Ky. side...

  11. First, the lighting was going to conform, but was changed by Moore. Not worth the months of delay and embarrassment.

And history has shown us that Moore will only appoint yes men (or women) and will not tolerate any disagreement. And he will have a 5 to 4 advantage. Would prefer a 4/4 split.

  12. Anon, is correct. Louisville has nice light post that can change like the lights on the bridge. Very nice. Jeffersonville basically has rope lights along the rails. Nice for sure, but not as nice as Louisville's.

  13. How did this even happen in the first place combined counsel and parks department? How or which former idiot(s) in charge came to let this occur.

  14. That is the way it always was before Jeffersonville moved up in class.

    1. Not true! 9 years ago when I worked with the parks board, there was Maybe one council member, Ron Grooms, and Kevin Lagrange was president.

  15. Annon needs to realize that Mike is Mayor.
He was elected by the residents to run the city.

He is not going to be in charge of the parks board, with any luck the citizens of Jeff will retake control.

  16. I fully realize that. I can still point out when he makes stupid mistakes that cost us months of the walking bridge and making us look incompetent.

  17. Hey, Woo, Obama was elected to lead this country by its citizens. You need to realize that.

(see how that can work against you?)

  18. Lapdog Matt Owen fought for the council to keep control , this was done to keep Moore from developing Colston park.

  19. I believe your wrong Anon. Owen voted with the majority that relinquished control to the new Parks Auth.

  21. If you will remember, Moore tried to change big 4 to run it across waiz property to profit off the taxpayers. The state said no! The residents said no!

  22. This thread has so many untruthful comments, especially in regards to the Big Four project completion, that it is hard to follow.

Good that the Council recognized and corrected their position with the parks department.

  25. Good call RF, due to political jealousies MM will never get ANY credit from the sore losers. He isn't perfect but a damn lot better than what we had before...Jeff is booming and busting at the seams which brings both good and bad side effects...

  26. Sorry Anon. but libelous statements about personal lives aren't tolerated.

If you want to comment about the mayor's performance or the issues feel free to do so but personal lives are taboo...

  27. Seems that Big4Anonymous has some serious personal issues.
