Gun Control

Another mass shooting has brought to the forefront the continuing emotional debate on gun control. I have very ambivalent feeling and must admit going back and forth on the debate, Owning various types of weapons (handguns, rifles, shotguns) I support the 2nd amendment right to own a gun. Though at one time I enjoyed target shooting and hunting, not so much anymore...especially hunting where I guess I have become a softie in my old age of taking any kind of life..

While myself I have never had the desire to own an AR-15 type of rifle there are law abiding citizens that do enjoy the sport of shooting them and should be entitled to that right.  On the same behalf I really question the gun lobby and their minions uncompromising stance on background checks and waiting periods. How is it even sane to allow a potential terrorist on the no flight list  legal access to purchase these  same semi- automatic  killing machines.

The gun lobby led by gun manufacturers and the NRA have implanted paranoia so deep into a lot of gun owners and the GOP that common sense has been replaced with an irrational fear that even the slightest restriction on purchasing a gun will lead to  government confiscation of all weapons ...a delusional fear that is untrue on any level....

Killing and violence will continue, someone determined to kill multiple individuals will use explosives, knives are whatever is the easiest to obtain...but why make it easy for them to obtain the AR-15 or similar weapons especially those known to be terror risks. A small delay and the inconvenience of a thorough back ground check seems like common sense, but then again no body ever accused the NRA of common sense....

  4. I disagree HT... these weapons that were designed for military use should be restricted to military use. period. Ban them.

    1. SM While the practical use (hunting, protection) of these type weapons is minimal banning them just won't happen because of political considerations and strength of the gun lobby...

    2. And how would a ban work? Are we going to go door to door and take them by force? Good luck with that....

  5. HT,
The problem with using any of the current lists to screen purchasers are the lists themselves. It seems that anyone can be added to these lists without any due process. once on the list there is not a way to get off. I have no problem with the government using proper screening methods, but so far the current proposals will do little so stop the problem. Remember, gun ownership is a right, not a privileged that can be revoked on a whim. The government needs to prove it's case in a court of law to revoke a right.

  6. Isn't there an appeals process Woo if someone on a terror list is denied a gun ??? I agree ownership is a right but just as convicted felons are not allowed firearms those with terrorist ties should be denied as well...Agreed that it would be little help to stop the problem but it is a small compromise and do we really want terrorists with easy access to AR-15's in this day and age ??/

  7. HT,
As far as I am aware, the only option is to lawyer up and sue in federal court.
Even with a win in court your mileage may vary.

For run of the mill gun purchases, if you are denied, your appeal will fall on deaf ears.
It seems the executive branch has reassigned the folks that process appeals.
You can file the paperwork, but no one will see it.

  8. OK Woo thanks for the info...like I said I strongly support the right to bears arms but just think we need to make it harder for bad guys to get these semi automatic weapons. On the same hand this violence will continue as sadly that's just the way things are in this time and age...

  10. The right to bear arms should not include the right to bear military weapons.

HT: the ban of military type weapons could be easily accomplished.

First we need to get rid of the whores in Congress who do the bidding of the NRA for money.
Second... BAN military type weapons. Allow these to be sold to state governments to be used for training/equipping swat teams, etc.
Third... Impose heavy fines when these have been discovered in future.
Fourth... ban the manufacture/sale of these weapons, ammo, and all related components

This can be accomplished over a generation or two. Time to get started.

  11. Did a high ranking government official
recently say that persons whom just happen
to be Radical Islamic Terrorists.... "only need out love and understanding"?

    Haven't some dangerous extremist people
proposed that owners of weapons actually
    be prosecuted for owning weapons?

Has any government official recently suggested that
US citizens be prosecuted for saying that "Global Warming is a Myth?"

    SHUDDER....

what have you to oppose this force? What will then become of you and your rights? Will not absolute despotism ensue?

  12. The 2nd amendment has nothing to do with hunting and target practice. It's about citizens having the right to protect themselves against tyrannical government. Our country is safer from foreign enemies and also our own government because of the 2nd amendment.

  13. paranoia is what it is...

just think about what you're saying. you really think you'll be a match for whatever the US govt can bring to the fight... the fight you've dreamed up in your own head, that is.

  14. Call it what you like it doesn't change the fact of why the 2nd amendment was created. You say I'm paranoid and I say you are the government's wet dream of someone who believes they actually have your safety at heart.

  15. Fact: Banning "military type weapons" is NOT going to stop mass shootings. If you can prove otherwise I am waiting. We have allowed the Government to turn many of our freedoms into their control of us, they need to leave the 2nd amendment as is. We can legally own our guns and no one has the right to disarm us unless we have committed a crime that prevents us from doing so.
