Homeless Center in Downtown Jeffersonville

The Louisville Rescue Mission is in the process of opening a homeless center in downtown Jeffersonville. The faith based organization plans include a day center for homeless education and help with low cost clothing. At this time there are no plans for providing a full time shelter for  the area homeless population. The center will be located on the corner of Chesnut and Walnut in the large, white church building.

Most everyone has compassion and a feeling of wanting to help the homeless  but you can still expect a push back from local residents residing in and around the location of the proposed center. While the plans now are for a limited daytime center and no full time residence or shelter these kind of centers have traditionally met community opposition in the past. Recently  plans for another proposed homeless center was shot down by the Jeffersonville zoning board/ City council which under pressure from area residents and spearheaded by former city councilman  Mike " Mr. Greenjeans" Smith nixed a zoning change that would have paved the way for a day center...

This is a tough issue for residents in this area and The BatBlog understands their concerns. The Louisville Rescue Mission to give them credit is moving slowly and is aware of a push back that will occur, and are trying to keep the public well informed in an attempt to alleviate concerns..

This appears to be a very worthwhile project for low income and homeless individuals and families. The BatBlog  believes it's the right thing to do and hopes area residents have the compassion to accept this help to the community...and help those less fortunate.

  1. Great news, long overdue

  2. People aren't receptive to homeless people when it's in their own neighborhood.

  3. It's in my neighborhood. I'm receptive.

This organization has a great relationship with its NULU neighbors. The need was going to have to be filled, and this organization is preferable to most the alternatives.

They are also completely privately funded, btw. Neighbors may have an opinion, but the taxpayers at large in not being billed for their services. Again, given how the same need for services could be filled, this is the more attractive option.

  4. ASSIMILATION CENTER PLANNED FOR JEFFERSONILLE

    "Louisville Rescue Mission
is in the process of opening
a homeless center in downtown Jeffersonville."

...."a day center for homeless education and help with low cost clothing.".....

    " 'AT THIS TIME'
    there are no plans
for providing a 'FULL TIME' shelter
    for the area homeless population."

    Ha!
    Double HA!
    Louisville
is exporting their problems to Jeffersonville.
    It is a CON.....

Get ready for a 24 hour a day 'Problem Center'.

How many blocks is it into Jeffersonville
from I-65m to this "ASSIMILATION CENTER"....?

Be ready for LOTS more daily serious difficulties.

    There "MAY BE" (hint)
    a "PLAN" for ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS
..............in the works. Be Vigilant, H-T.

Jeffersonville is being taken advantage of and abused.....

    This is a serious mistake.

    1. This sounds like a legitimate organization that has been doing this for a long time. The problem is already here we don't have to have it exported in. Your's is the typical response "more serious difficulties" "24 hour problem center" ...

The homeless problem isn't going away give these and other organizations a chance to help...

  5. Jeffersonville better wake up quickly.

"MS-13 used homeless shelters in Northern Virginia
and forcing residents to engage in sex trafficking"...

MS-13 is SOUNDLY entrenched in Louisville.
Some Louisville gangs that you never heard of yet,
but that fueling the surging Louisville crime problem: Victory Park Crips,
Badd News, Doom Squad, Taliban, Cut Throat Committee,
    Market Street Crips.

  6. Award Winning Bat Blog Discussion/Expose

A "Concept Center" was previously blocked
at the West Court Avenue/Michigan Avenue location,
then was subsequently blocked at the planned East Chestnut Street
    and Locust Street location.

    Placing this "Concept Center"
operation in Jeffersonville is a mistake.

    The gangs
    in El Salvador,
    Houston, Atlanta, Mexico,
Syria, and Chicago thank you, though.

  7. Most homeless choose that life style don't want help unless it's to buy them something to drink.

  8. The area is a residential area. The center may be a good idea but Not in a residential area. If it were being proposed for Northaven or Elk Point or Crystal Ridde, you can bet the neighbors would be in an uproar. The downtown residents are no different. Downtown is being revitalized. Don't destroy it and lower the value of residential homes by placing this Center in the middle of it.

  9. It is not an exclusively residential area. Not even close.

There is a half-way house a block and a half away. A social services center sits behind that. A half block from these buildings are Olde Towne, Wall Street Cafe...

There is a home for disabled adults on the other end of the block.

It is surrounded by churches that serve meals to the same population several days a week.

The Knights of Columbus bingo hall is a block and a half in another direction.

It sits three blocks from Spring St and its businesses and services including one for mental health and several that serve alcohol.

Oh, and a few blocks in another direction sits Clark County Jail.

Oh, and the building's last occupant was a business. Before that it was a church.

  10. This is basically why there isn't enough of these centers ...no one want's them in their area. The last one rejected seemed like a perfect location Court and Michigan Ave. not near a lot of residential homes but Mike "Mr. GreenJeans" Smith led the protest that helped reject that sight...

The homeless are ostracized because there are some that embrace the lifestyle and alcoholism is prevalent among them. No matter there needs to be help available for those willing to be helped. It will be interesting how much push back this project will receive...

  11. The main cause of homelessness in America is the lack of affordable housing. Some of the self rigorous moralists should live a month homeless and experience the degradation of the streets. To believe that most choose to live this way reflects how ignorant some are.

    1. Between Mayor Gahan razing public housing in New Albany and Mayor Bob Hall trying to raze Pleasant Ridge, the shortage of affordable housing is only going to get worse. Having a reputable organization already in place will be a blessing.
