Clark Co. Council Races

Four candidates from each party will vie for three positions to qualify for the November general election and the three at large seats on the Clark Co. council. Three incumbents on the current council Kevin Vissing (D), Joe Hubbard and Kelly Khuri (R) will attempt to be reelected.
In the primary only one candidate from each party will be eliminated.

On the Democratic side according to the BatPoll the least popular candidate appears to be former council member and perennial candidate Perry Smith. The Batblog agrees, Smith has had his time on the council and it's time for someone else. Kevin Vissing along with Joe Hubbard and newcomer Mark Felix get the nod and endorsement of this blog. They should and will win their primary races...

The GOP council race may be closer as four vie for the three positions. Incumbent Kelly Khuri has been outstanding in her first term and has earned reelection. Though he trails in the BatBlog we endorse former Sellersburg town council member Doug Reiter a man of integrity and Terry Conway to continue on to the fall election along with Ms. Khuri...

Be Sure To Vote ....May 3

  1. Lots of great candidates to pick from. As I've watched, it takes a while to get acclimated to understand county government. Unfortunately we have been shorted by the 3-2-1 tax rules imposed by the state as I came on the council almost 8 years ago.
If a contender says they can cut our budget, or fix our budget, be wary of that candidate. Only the state can fix it. We are close to being short half of the needed funds to operate county government. Our employees have seen a net increase of only 1.5% wage increase while I've been on the council, which is pitiful.
I have been non partisan in my voting for my time on the council. The DLGF determines our tax rate, so we can't tax our way out of this mess. I would appreciate your vote for my re-election to the county council.

  2. We need for the state to take a look at how much each taxing unit gets. Obviously, the county needs more to operate. The jail takes the lions share. With a drug epidemic increasing the cost of law enforcement, prosecution, probation, housing offenders, our county needs help.

  3. Kevin I know you were against the abolishing of Jeff City court. How much of a negative effect has that had on the county's financial situation ?

  4. HT- I have no idea of the fiscal impact, but just this Tuesday Circuit 3 Pretrials were the most crowded I have EVER seen in 30 years. I don't blame it all on Jeff City but it is a fact. Jeremy Mull is responding correctly, he has four (4) deputy prosecutors trying to deal with it in PTC sessions. Judge Weber has responded correctly by instituting a policy of trying to push resolutions by limiting the number of PTC's per case. Still though, April misdemeanor cases were being set for completion (in other words the state and defense agree on what the deal should be) for mid-August. The Court is overloaded. Imagine waiting 4 months for a simple misdemeanor plea. THANKS Jeff City Council!

  6. Susan Popp came before is requesting an additional employee to cover the overloaded docket. Joe Hubbard, myself and K khuri voted for. It failed 4-3.

  7. I liked seeing you and Kelly vote together on that, Kevin. It seems like the county spends money it doesn't have on things it doesn't need, but balks on paying for a basic and critical need, a need made worse by the Jeff City Council's actions.

Sorry you two were on the losing side of that.

  8. Led by Ed "Moe" Zastawny, Matt "Lapdog" Owen and Connie "Ms. Obstruction" Sellers that council will go down as the worst in Jeffersonville history. They made the incredibly stupid decision to eliminate the Jeff City Court. This politically motivated hatchet job will cast a heavy burden on the already fiscally strapped county for years to come...

With friends like that Jeffersonville council who needs enemies !!!

  9. It's been pretty low key races here in C.C. not many yard signs....what gives ???

  10. I've chosen not to clutter with yard signs in the primary. Countywide sign installation is extremely time consuming. I drove 150 miles one election picking mine up. Spring storms generally create havoc with signs.
I'll put some out in the fall.
