Teresa Perkins' GCCS School board Candidacy

A lot of locals are upset that Teresa Perkins a sitting member of the Greater Clark Co. Schools (GCCS) school board is being allowed to run again this year for her seat. Ms. Perkins was indicted on a felony shop lifting charge in Tennesseee last year prompting an uproar that led to a new law being enacted that disqualifies convicted felons from holding that position. The law didn't go far enough in The BatBlog's opinion and Ms. Perkins  due to a loophole in the way she was sentenced (diversion program) and a Dem. majority on the election board Ms. Perkins will be allowed to run again for the seat on the board she now occupies.

The BatBlog supports the rights of all citizens to make amends for mistakes and believes most everyone deserves a second chance. With that in mind we are not outraged by Ms. Perkins' candidacy. If she payed the required restitution and performed the community service that her sentence included and since the new law allows the loophole she used... than more power to her in her quest to be reelected.

On the same behalf her opponent(s) have every right to use Ms. Perkins' indiscretion to the max in their campaign against her. Teresa Perkins marred her resume of a fine career in education with the crime she was charged with and disappointed a lot of voters with her actions, whether that is enough to defeat her remains to be seen.

The BatBlog hopes Ms. Perkins has learned from her mistake and continues on a positive track in the future and we wish her well. As for the school board race The BatBlog thinks this indiscretion is enough to keep us from endorsing or voting for her in the coming election. Public opinion and her reputation has been tainted which has us believing it's time move on and elect Kelli Datillofor GCCS board...

  1. Someone on FaceBook posted that Perkins hasn't done her public service hours required by the court. Don't know if that to be true or not?

    1. She stated before the election board that the four years of probabtion and community service HAS NOT been completed.

    2. The. how does she get to run for an elected office. I thought felons were prohibited?

    3. The law in Indiana states that an order of conviction of guilty has to be entered by the court. Since Ms Perkins pled guilty and was entered into the diversion program no conviction was entered and will not be unless she does not complete the four requirements of that program; letter of apology, restitution, 100 hours of community service, and four years probation. So even though he has not completed the community service and the four years probation, because there was no "conviction" on record, she can in fact run for school board again.

  2. I have no idea if that is true or not either...If she hasn't fulfilled her obligations I believe the diversion program could be taken away from her.

If she hasn't fulfilled it, she shouldn't be allowed to run. My guess is that though the new law didn't cover that.

Sadly our lawmakers come up a little short a lot of times putting any teeth or bite in many of our laws...Which I think is the case here...

  3. How would anyone know since the person in charge of community service keeps no written record ? Perhaps she just turned in a blank money order? It's not the program that's the problem but the people who run it.

  5. Mrs.Perkins has my family's full support. Teresa is an excellent educator and great person, Clark county is lucky to have such a strong educated woman on its school board.

    1. She very well may be, but with this type of crime character issues come into play. I'll have to cast my vote elsewhere. If she would win though I wouldn't have any problem with it ...the voters will have spoken..

Maybe, under her leadership some of our kids will go on to be television stars (60 days in)

  6. What is the loop hole? If she pleaded guilty she is a convicted felon unless Tennessee's diversion program is vastly different than most others.

    1. It is my understanding and I think I am correct on this. If she completes the diversion program the felony charge won't be on her record...

    2. Yes, but until it is dropped she strands as a convicted felon and she will be until the court drops the charges.

    3. I don't think so if that was the case she wouldn't be eligible to run...she wasn't convicted it was pled down...

  8. Maybe one of our attorney friends will weigh in on this, but I don't think Ms. Perkins is considered a "convicted felon" unless she doesn't abide by the terms of her probation...

  9. Typically the person pleads guilty and sentencing is withheld to see if they complete the program. If they do they are allowed to withdraw their plea and the charges are dismissed. If they fail to complete the program they are sentenced to the felony offense for which they have already pleaded to. So, once they have told the judge that they are guilty they are a convicted felon. Tennessee may be different but that is how it typically works.

  10. Maybe we can ask the new probation office that got hired making $60,000 per year. She must know everything to get paid $13,000 above the starting salary.

  11. Not sure how this in anyway relates to the Perkins issue?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Ms Perkins would be stupid to not complete the diversion program. I don't think she's stupid, so perhaps she already has completed it. How would anyone know that for sure?
If that's the case, she's followed the law, and she's not a convicted felon, if I'm following what people on here are saying.

    1. At the election committee meeting she admitted completing TWO of the FOUR components of her diversion program; restitution for the jewelry stolen and a letter of apology. She HAS NOT completed her four years probation not had she completed the 100 hours of community service.

  13. Court records are open to the public in most. cases. If anyone really wanted to put this isstto rest they could contact the court in Tennessee and get the truth.

  14. A Quandry for the Government and Punishment

Shoplifting is a problem for many businesses.
The government itself is a tremendous problem every day for many businesses.

The government is never punished and continues to add
more devastating, unnecessary, and onerous regulations every year.

Shoplifting is much reduced by the use of watchful cameras.
Watchful Americans speak out everyday against governmental excess but little is implemented to control the government.

The imposition of regulations by the public sector upon the private sector
is out of control and all Americans suffer because
    of the excessive government intrusions.

The public would like to punish the government for the harm it often causes, but the process to remove the harmful intrusions is very difficult to implement.
    Almost impossible.

An example is the Obama Administration's not allowing citizens
of the United States of America to sue evil foreign dictatorships in our courts
for their complicity in the attacks upon America by Radical Islamist Terrorists.

The federal congress of the United States FINALLY passed legislation removing the governmental roadblocks that would not allow Americans to have their day in court against the foreign dictatorship governments.

It even took an override of the unwise veto by President Barack Hussein Obama
who harmfully blocked that access for many, many years.

Teresa Bottorff Perkins apparently was unable to resist purloining some shinny objects of fancy bling jewelry. She was nabbed and is paying a big price.

She is paying a big debt back to society for that unwise shoplifting activity.
it is the most humiliating thing that she has ever experienced
in her long, dedicated involvement with public service.

A person should not be disqualified from seeking office in America by an arbitrary standard imposed by self-seeking politicians.
The public should have the sole discretion to determine who will be selected. Everyone should be allowed to run. Let the voters decide,
    not the politicians.

The shoplifting, of course, did not set a good example,
and it was really, really dumb.

Of course, Ms. Perkins should have just not sought
the office again, but her love for the children
and life long dedication to excellence
    in education kept her involved.

Both Ms.Perkins and her opponent, Ms. Datillo,
are excellent and highly knowledgeable candidates for the school board.

The voters will render the final decision, as it should be.

    Ms. Datillo will win easily.
The correct process for our Democratic Republic
    will have been exercised.

  15. Bat Blog Timely Discussion of Democracy

The vote in the US Senate
to overcoming President Barack Hussein Obama's veto
and to allow American citizens to seek a judicial redress of grievances
against the evil foreign dictator governments involved
in supporting Radical Islamic Terrorism, passed 97-1.

    Harry Reid voted against
the right of the Americans to have access to their own courts.

    Sanders and Kayne
didn't even bother to show up
    and exercise their elected responsibility.

    Reid, Sanders, and Kayne
are a big part of the serious problems with government today.
They are long time insider power brokers of the DC Beltway government elites.

I like the fact that we have a choice
for the school board, and I dislike the fact
that our president would not allow US citizens access to American courts.

    2. She has also lost a lot of respect from her fellow educators. If a classroom teacher had been charged with felony theft, they would NOT have a job with the corporation. So why are classroom educators NOT held to the same standard as members of the school board?

Ms Perkins has served the community and is well respected by many. However, this nasty business does question her right, as a member of the school board, to discipline others for similar or lesser offenses.

  22. "Dr Melin is an outstanding leader. Why wouldn't she support him?"

    Well, to start:
Melin's dangerous, excessive referendum failed 75-25, by a huge 50%.
Melin's illegal serial bond issue scam was stopped by the Indiana DLGF.
Dr.Daeschner should never have been forced out by the school board.
He was doing a great job.

  23. If the newspaper reports are accurate, and if you are referring to the school board member charged with shoplifting the Bling in Tennessee, she did not buy her way out of anything. She was forced to enter a plea as a first offender
and got a restrictive deferral program imposed. Very harsh treatment.

But the question remains, where is Tammy?
We know that Teresa is on a restrictive deferral program,
is undergoing counseling, has been punished,
and is involved with the school board.

However, no one seems to have any information about Tammy.....

  26. Ms Perkins should have resigned at the time she plead guilty. Teachers and staff would not have kept their jobs. School board members shouldn't either. They should set the example-- not think they are more important than those they supervise. Shameful that she is so arrogant and self-righteous to believe the rules don't apply to her.
