Bigger and Better....

If your a fan of economic growth, nicer amenities and consumer services, Jeffersonville, In. is the place to be right now. Probably no city in the state is experiencing as much growth as the city of Jeff as of late.

This past week's announcement was a new shopping complex that will feature two large retailers, movie theater as well as other retail shops. When you couple that with the recent ground breaking of the downtown Marriot hotel complex which includes more retail shops and restaurants, along with the upcoming "Gateway project" on the 10th St. corridor you can see why this area is booming.

It's nice to see amenities like a movie theater which Jeff has been without for over 20 years come to fruition. It looks like in the future Jeffersonville will have all the consumer needs filled with all the new varied retail establishments and varieties of dining choices.Costco is one of the rumored new tenants and The BatBlog thinks that would be a good fit ...Any suggestions from you readers on what you would like ???

Of course with growth brings additional traffic and traffic problems...the widening of Holman Ln. long needed is a start. Hopefully additional access roads and traffic planning will be addressed in a timely manner.

Mayor Moore and the Redevelopment Dept. need to be congratulated and while the sleepy old days of simpler times are sometimes missed...Jeffersonvillle is poised to be a bustling destination for the future, increasing property values and new opportunities for residents and visitors...

  1. I would like to see some upper end clothing shops. Kohl's is a nice store but other options would be nice.

  2. Agree on the clothing comment, but not sure exactly what that would be...I'm glad we have Kohl's but it certainly can't take the place of Bacon's which wasn't exactly super high-end but definitely filled a nice niche in this area...And there won't be another Stewart's...There really aren't that many stores between discount and higher end that I can think of anymore that aren't already in the area or have no interest in coming to the area...The one store that comes to mind for me is Nordstrom's, but even Louisville can't seem to get one besides the Rack...I think one would do well in the area if we could get one though...If you're talking about smaller shops like Chico's or Black/White Market, I'm just not sure how many of those can be supported in one given area...Maybe ???

I would like to see us get our own Target...Then we could avoid the road from hell otherwise called Veteran's Parkway...New Albany managed to keep theirs after the Super Target opened in C'ville and I think another could be supported in Jeff.

  3. A few high end restaurants would be nice. Maybe the mayor can weigh in about what's coming.

  4. I would like a home improvement store. I know we have several in Clarksville and I guess Menards is in Jeff, but it would be nice to have something closer for lumber.

  5. Funny that all this "development" is coming -- yet our school enrollment continues to decline -- while West Clark schools are brimming over.

  6. There are only so many ways to slice a pie and then someone gets a smaller and smaller piece. Unless the population is drastically increasing (which doesn't seem to be the case in Jeff so far), then all these new businesses are just taking business from another existing business. Menards - for example -- may be nice but I wonder how much Lowes and Home Depot have been affected. New restaurants just give consumers more choices -- and existing restaurants suffer. If we get another clothing store, then Kohls and Dillards and others will suffer. Sort of a Catch 22.

  7. Within 12 months you'll see several new stores and restaurants open in Jeff. Our population has grown by over 3,000 new residents in the past 4 years.

  8. so why has the school population declined by over 300??? why are people choosing to send their children elsewhere?

    1. I don't know, I love our schools and teachers. My kids have excelled at Greater Clark. Shelby's on the Deans List at Hanover, Ally has just enrolled at Ball State and Gerrin is being recruited by Division I colleges. I can't speak for anyone else, but consider me a very satisfied parent. Proud To Be A Red Devil.

  9. Mr Mayor

Can you comment or give an update on the Thompson Lane improvement. Seems to be dragging on with no one on site working.

    Thanks

  10. They are several options available for education...Catholic, Christian, charter school etc. There has also been a boon in the housing market (building and sales) in the Sellersburg area. My guess is that would factor into 300 (if accurate) student decline. It's no secret that West Clark school systems is busting at the seams...This is something the school Superintendent and school board need to address if this trend continues...

  11. They could address it -- but it would require looking in the mirror. Doubt they will do that. West Clark is over capacity due to students residing in other districts transferring into their schools -- most of these transfer students come from Greater Clark. Most of the students at Rock Creek also come from Greater Clark. Perhaps the Board needs to ask why parents are choosing to leave Greater Clark in such large numbers.

  12. Does everything have to evolve into a discussion about GCCS's??...Ugh.

Interesting note...This is the first year that more 8th graders coming from Sacred Heart have chosen to go to JHS instead of Providence.

  13. I think GCCS is doing just fine. I agree with Jules, stop the endless griping about our schools. I promise you they are doing better than ever despite the handful of naysayers that are like broken records. I see the new businesses coming up, but I can't help but notice so many empty buildings for sale or lease. What about the closed down restaurant on Holmans and all of those empty businesses behind it? What about all the vacant businesses along 10th street and old gas stations? What about all of the homes around Jeff that are boarded up or sitting empty with foreclosure stickers on the doors? Progress is great, but let's clean up the mess that is already here!!!

  14. I can be a cheerleader all day long for Jeffersnoville... One thing that needs to be managed correctly is the empty space being vacated, in favor of the new shiny thing.
Another thing to keep in mind for the schools is the 2008 recession and the impact that has had on new births. The birth rate has gone down.

    1. Good point...the city needs to be careful the sprawl toward the edges of town can leave areas neglected. Downtown has been revitalized but areas of 10th St. from Youngstown to Springfield Dr. are begging for improvement...

  15. As far as schools they remain a parent's decision and obviously updates to the individual schools would make them more attractive... but the different choices seem to work fine for the majority parents...

  17. I had a buyer interested in the 7 acre tract the Auto Auction property owns on the South side of Tenth Street, but when I contacted Paul Fetter he said they were not interested in selling the property at this time. The project would have made for a great entertainment venue and draw for the entire area. We've also had other potential restaurants interested in the old "OUR BEST" and MIKE AND MATT'S restaurant, but they were unable to get a beer and wine license due to the restriction of the Church located next door.

    1. That license ( or lack of ) is a killer for that location...I can't even remember if the original owners were interested in a liquor license and found out too late they couldn't get one...Or did they not even want one at the time...Regardless, it's a drawback for that property...And it's in an odd location sort of...Wonder if anybody could buy the church off??!! :)

10th Street is in the process of a major upgrade
that will serve its revitalization occurring over the next 2o years.
    The Newsandtribune chose to highlight
the movement of the location of a coffee shop
around 50 feet internally from the corner of the new
$15,000,000 Mariott to a spot farther inside that building.

    Prosperity
At the same excellent Plan Com meeting,
Mayor Moore's planning director discussed IN DETAIL the SEVEN multiple AREAS being utilized for Jeffersonville's significant growth
    and enhanced quality of life.

The N-T has not yet covered in detail what the planner, Nathan Pruitt, presented.
One of the new areas of focus in the brand new,
    forward looking, sophisticated improvement plan
is the revitalization of 10th Street.

10th Street is an Urban Infill area
and the city's long term plan is quite striking.
It will change the area from declining, to static, to upgrading.
Those are the three steps in the process.

The extensive 10th Street economic corridor
and Holman's lane are receiving major upgrades
with over $34,000.000 being invested in their
    "road and street scape" enhancements!

    The widening and significant improvement
of a great length of 10th Street is being implemented.
The rebirth of the area is being soundly planned.

Drive from Penn Street down 10th Street to Main Street
and see where the efforts are already underway as the changes move Eastward.

    Visual and Functional Enhancements
The zoning changes, "road/street scape" improvements,
and access to additional adjacent parcels will allow developers
investing capital to add additions to their new improved buildings.

Owner's property values will increase with the improvements.
The entire corridor will also see "enhanced urban walkability capabilities
from the adjacent neighborhoods" for the economic corridor.
    These commercial sites are enhanced
as the city's plan is implemented
    over a period of time.

    Geographic Enhancement/Revitalization
    More People/Urban Infill

The new high end, multimillion dollar
245 unit apartment complex going in near
the old Our Best/Mikes and Matt's location will see access
onto Holman's and also onto 1oth Street via the really nice new
    Thompson Lane interchange.

The big influx of new residents will add vitality to 10th Street location.

    New N/T Series?
It would be nice if the nifty Newsandtribune
featured a complete, detailed series of articles about
the significant enhancements of the vital 10th Street corridor
    AND the other areas
    covering the mayor's detailed plans
as presented to the Planning Commission by Mr. Pruitt.

    The infill projects downtown
and along the rebirth of 10th Street
are started and will see significant improvement
    for Jeffersonville
    in the future.

The mayor and the city council
are doing a very good job in their development efforts.

  20. Had a group of tourists stop by place where I work. They wondered why we don't have a welcome to Indiana sign on bridge near our side or on base of Big 4, I just assumed we did. They were from Spain and wanted to take a photo. Mayor is that the case?
