Can Democrats Rise in State Races ???

It looks like Democrats have a real shot in 2016 of claiming some state races that have been held exclusively by the GOP in recent history. Namely the Governor, Senate and the 9th dist. House of Rep. seats.

John Gregg (D) who gave Mike Pence a run for his money in 2012 has a good chance of claiming the governor's house for the first time in over a decade against last minute replacement candidate (R)  Eric Holcomb. It isn't a sure thing for Gregg in the predominately leaning Rep. state of Indiana, but chances are better than in recent memory for a Dem. victory.

Chances are even better in the U.S. Senate seat in Indiana where the popular and politically successful Evan Bayh returns to try and grab the seat held now by the GOP. Bayh and his father Birch have always been popular with voters in the state and very successful over the years. Evan Bayh has been a two term governor and senator in the state of Indiana and should defeat opponent Todd Young (R) currently Representative in Indiana's 9th district...

In the 9th Dist. U.S. House seat Shelli Yoder (D) faces Trey (Tennessee Trey) Hollingsworth (R) the millionaire businessman who in a controversial move relocated to Indiana just to run for Congress. Local resident Russell Brooksbank a Libertarian is also in the race but shouldn't be a factor. The move  to relocate by Hollingsworth should be enough to put Ms. Yoder over the top. It's hard to believe that local Hoosiers will want a rich outsider to represent them against the native Yoder.... political leanings non withstanding...

The BatBlog strongly endorses all three Democrats and looks for all three to do well in their respective races, especially Evan Bayh who is a proven winner and leader in the Hoosier state...

  1. Agree on 2 of the 3. The Bayh/Young race has me conflicted. I know Bayh has been good for Indiana, but I also like how Young went against the extremist and didn't vote to shut down the government.

Maybe a game time decision for me.

  2. It'll come as no surprise I'll be voting a straight D ticket, but I especially want Yoder to win...If she doesn't it will be so demoralizing that the people of So. In. were so easily swayed and bought by someone who couldn't pass a Facebook quiz, "You know you're from Southern Indiana" without a lot of help.

  3. You're voting straight Dem for local races too?

    1. Pretty much...There's one race that may be the exception, but I'm not looking at a Republican to fill the seat. :)

School board: While not race specific, you have a good idea of how they lean if you've lived here all your life...I can't deny that influences me some...But, it does give a little wiggle room too...I probably should care more about the school board than I do...But the constant harping about the board and administration has made me tune out.

And again while not race specific ( although ideologically you know where it's coming from) I'm voting "NO" on the Right to Hunt and Fish Amendment...I'd encourage everyone to explore it on your own...It's not about taking away your right to hunt or fish as the wording suggests, but to give a green light to coral animals and just shoot them...That's a little simplistic but it's the bottom line...I'll be voting to protect wildlife.

  4. Yoder is nice as a person, but she is clearly "Bloomington Cheryl"....

    Hollingsworth is "Jeffersonville Trey"....

Easy ideological decision to "Make America Great Again" !

It is energizing to see such a clear distinction.

  5. Courthouse Sage:
LHH was born in Florida and ended up running for congress in Indiana.
LHH generally carried the 9th District in Indiana by huge margins.
In the backlash against the Clinton's in 1994,
with the implementation of Newt's Contract for America,
    Congressman Hamilton barely held on.
It was Clark County's margin that saved him......
Congressman Hamilton ran one more term 1996 and won by a comfortable margin.
He then retired to Bloomington to run a foundation/think tank gig there.

Shelli Yoder was born way up north in a county next to the Michigan border
    in Shipshewana, Indiana,
and ended up migrating to Bloomington.

She lost to John Young in 2012 for the 9th District congressional seat by
    165,332 (55.45%) to 132,848 (44.55%),
    a margin of 33,000 votes.

In a close race in the 9th District, Clark and Floyd Counties could,
at one time, be counted on by the Democrats to deliver the margin of victory.
Clark and Floyd saved Baron Hill with his overall district margin
of 1,000 votes in one of his races.

Bloomington and Monroe County will deliver big for Yoder.
Floyd County is expected to deliver a large margin for Yoder.
The race essentially then is boiled down to Clark County.........

Clark County will be the decisive factor
    for Ms.Yoder or Mr. Hollingsworth.

What does H-T predict as the raw vote margin in Clark County
for Jeffersonville's Hollingsworth or Bloomington's Yoder?

Who caries the county and this wins the election?

  6. I'll take a Bloomington mindset over a typical Jeffersonville one almost any day. :)

Constructively, it does seem that a "Bloomington Midset"
wants to CREATE problems for others,
while a "Jeffersonville Mindset" works to SOLVE problems for everyone.

From a 'constitutionally constructive and sound basis',
I will take a Jeffersonville mind set any day!

    2. Seriously??...That makes me giggle. :)

Academia and think-tanks always create problems that the anti-intellectual sect has to step in and solve.

      Got it.

(Giggling is always good for the soul!)

An inaccurate, superior attitude may be the problem:
      I.)......"Academia and think-tanks".....
      VS
      II.).....a disparaged "anti-intellectual sect".....

Bloomington, via an "infestation" by some at IU,
      has ATTEMPTED to FOIST such inaccurate elitist drivel;
      however,
the "Wise and Legendary Jeffersonville 'SUPER_TYPICALS' "
      have always saved the day!

      Jeffersonville rocks!

"While a Bloomington mindset is just dandy for ...Bloomington,
a Jeffersonville mind set is much better
    for Jeffersonville!"

    "The distinction is hugeeeee!"

  8. Teresa had a very nice, informative mailer today.
She is very qualified for the school board.

    I am voting for Teresa.

House Republicans are already preparing for ‘years’ of investigations of Clinton
    By David Weigel

    October 26 

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — Jason Chaffetz, the Utah congressman wrapping up his first term atop the powerful House Oversight Committee, unendorsed Donald Trump weeks ago. That freed him up to prepare for something else:
    spending years, come January,
probing the record of a President Hillary Clinton.

“It’s a target-rich environment,” the Republican said in an interview in Salt Lake City’s suburbs. “Even before we get to Day One, we’ve got two years’ worth of material already lined up. She has four years of history at the State Department, and it ain’t good.”
