Lindon Dodd Article....Tilting at Windmills

Recently News/Tribune opinion writer Lindon Dodd wrote a piece expressing his disdain for the local blog scene. CLICK HERE FOR ARTICLE... The BatBlog doesn't know if Mr. Dodd had any particular blog or forum in mind particularly the "Award winning " BatBlog but here is my spin on his article....

First of all Mr. Dodd  appears to be overly melodramatic in his self proclaimed "crusade" against social media in Indiana. Unless there is some instances The BatBlog isn't aware of no one here locally that  has had their "life destroyed" by blog or forum posts as Mr. Dodd claims has occurred  on multiple instances.

Are politicians, public figures, patronage job holders, media personalities and writers subject to criticism on social media ??? Yes they most definitely are, just as they have been for hundreds of years on other mediums before the internet was even thought of.

Do people some times get carried away and over zealous with criticism on social media ?? Certainly.... nothing gets blood boiling quicker than politics and political discussions that at times are contentious and personal. On the same behalf anyone who enters public life on the above mentioned positions knows or should know, criticism comes with the territory. If you are thin skinned it's best to avoid that particular situation and position.

Of course that doesn't give one the right  to state malicious personal lies, but personally I just haven't seen that here locally.  A responsible blogger or forum moderator will moderate all comments because libel and slander laws DO apply contrary to what Mr. Dodd stated in his article. Rumor, satire, and disagreement on politics, political positions and appointments aren't libel.

Mr. Dodd by his blanket labeling Anonymous posters and bloggers as "cowardly liars" appears to be a little hypocritical. If these actual "life destroying" posting actually occurred he should bring them forward and name specific people, blogs  or forums where they were posted.  Otherwise The BatBlog feels much like Don Quixote Mr. Dodd maybe fighting (tilting) his own imaginary windmills. Good luck in reinventing the internet Mr. Dodd ....you are going to need it.

  1. Don't know what he's crying about which blog or forum is he referring to?

    1. The only local blogs I know of are the batblog and goliath's and of course the ccc. I don't know any issue he could have with any of them.

  2. Only two possible culprits, imo, CCC and BatBlog.

What else is there locally? The other two have beaten that one blog, what was it, Gnaw something, into oblivion, so that can't be it.

Mr. Dodd is taking himself way too seriously. Melodramatic is a good word.

  3. Lindon does look damn good on that horse! The armor is really cool...........And he really does write good newspaper articles. He just needs to chill. The world has become a cruel, dangerous place.

  4. The BatBlog takes moderation of comments very seriously....You would be shocked at the personal stuff sent to me that is unfit for print. I make a point not to delve into personal lives or anything libel...Some off color comments may slip by but we try to keep it to a minimum...

Public figures should know what they are getting into and are fair game for criticism and to poke a little fun at...and that is the mission of the BatBlog to have a little fun discussing local issues, projects and politics.

We all need to learn not to take ourselves so seriously, something Mr. Dodd needs to work on...

  6. I applaud Mr. Dodd. Too many sour pusses have taken to not just attacking a person's policies, but also the person themselves. Including this blog.

    I say go get them!

  7. As someone who has family both elected and working government jobs, I love this! It has been very hard for me to see some of the hateful and distasteful comments made about them just because you disagree with them.

Maybe you all should remember, it's not just the person, but also their families.

It would also do you all a lot of good to remember that the world changes. Things don't stay the same.

    1. Someone that chooses public life knows upfront that they are not only paid by the taxpayers but their actions and policies are subject to criticism. This is the American way and applies to presidents on down.

If you choose this public life your family needs to realize this as well. My comments are never hateful and distaste is subjective. Is the BatBlog sometimes sarcastic ?? Yes ..

Maybe The BatBlog isn't your cup of tea ...try something else.

  8. Any of those on Lindon's melodramatic bandwagon have actual examples of comments that were out of line - he says there have been outright lies - and not moderated?

  9. I'm curious what comments have been lies but wouldn't qualify as libel.

  11. A source close to the controversy,
one that wanders the halls of abuse/power in the house of the courts,
has reputedly 'fingered the dancing heads thing' as a possible point source of irritation.

One note in the conversation is that Lindon did not even get his head plastered
on one of the Award Winning Bat Blog 'dog playing soccer pics'.
That may have made him feel left out.....

    1. Most people consider being included in a BatBlog dance video an honor...Ask any of the Chatter Chicks they loved their appearances...Obviously Mr.Dodd has little or no sense of humor and thin skinned to attack The "award winning" BatBlog without prevarication...

  12. Mr. Dodd is a public employee, not a public figure or politician. He got his job in the courthouse family most likely by political connections. Courthouse and work release employees are patronage employees, not merit employees. He got his job the same way that most court employees did, by knowing someone. And his job is very political. That's just the way the county operates. The man by all accounts is a decent man and employee. I'm all for exposing public corruption and incompetence. However, none of the negative comments about Mr. Dodd or staff seem to indicate any Illegal activities. Therefore some of the comments seem to be no more that a personal attack with little substance.

    1. I hadn't written one word about Mr. Dodd and NEVER read his articles until someone brought HIS article in question to my attention. Therefore I have NEVER said one word about anything concerning his being "corrupt" or "incompetent" and NEVER "personally attacked" him...

I did include him in the "Dancing with the Clark Co. Stars" which is just a silly Jib Jab video that most people think funny and it is harmless.

Apparently Mr. Dodd has no sense of humor and painted all bloggers as "cowardly liars" in his newspaper article...I responded to the article with this post. If Mr. Dodd doesn't like criticism of his articles in a public newspaper, maybe he shouldn't attack bloggers and internet forums with silly name calling and rants...

  13. Dodd is a political tool. Weber had sheriff Rotten create a job for him. If you're in a government job due to a political favoritism people are going to judge you. If he can't handle that then he should go back to the private sector.

  14. I don't see where anyone has personally attacked Mr. Dodd. I am sure he is a nice man, but when you accept a political job because you know someone then you should expect people will talk about you.

  15. While I enjoy the right of people being allowed to speak their mind. I has serious reservations about Mr. Dodd writing for the paper, considering he is the head of Community Corrections. He needs to be careful that he is not mixing his personal feelings and his professional side while writing these columns.

    1. It's okay, not many read the local paper anymore.
      Especially the opinion section.

    2. If you are writing an "opinion' article then you are open to other opinions as well. I barely knew who he was until someone forwarded me his column which I never read before.

For someone to not know that libel and slander laws are in effect and cover the internet is surprising... If he is against others voicing differing opinions, I would suggest he change occupations or move to Russia where differing opinions are dealt with in another manner...

  16. The fact that few read newspapers is a sad indicator of the American Public. People no longer read. The Union's are to few to educate the working class. Too many believe Fox News is objective. We have a very uninformed population who have become one issue voters. We have politicians who pander to fear, anxiety and hate, not to the intellect.

"Too many believe Fox News is objective."
Of course it is. The majority of the MSM is dangerously Communistic.

Unless we have the Second Amendment, we have no rights.
The rest are just paper rights.
