Clark County Coroner's Race

Clark Co. residents will elect a new coroner this November. The race includes former coroner Edwin Coots (D) , Billy Scott (R) and Libertarian candidate Kelli Khuri. The coroner position over the years has been held by several members of the Coot's family who have served admirably and with class. That's why The BatBlog endorses Edwin Coots for the position in this years election.

While the coroner position is mostly administrative it  typically is held by local funeral directors and Mr. Scott and Mr. Coots are both in that field. Nothing against Ms. Khuri as she did a fine job as a county council member, but The BatBlog feels she would be better as a different public servant other than coroner.

All of the candidates we feel would do an excellent job we just feel Mr. Coot's experience and tradition give him an edge. The strong showings recently of the GOP party here locally could make this a close race...but Coots should win

  2. In reference to the position being mostly administrative.... Does the Coroner not go to the death scenes for natural causes and possible crime scenes for unnatural causes?? As I am sure a lot of administrative work is involved, this important part of the job seems far from administrative. I don't see how Khuri could possibly be qualified for this. It actually blows my mind that she is portraying that she IS indeed qualified. I have a feeling that without years of experience and training, if elected the first scene she walks into with a suicide victims brains dripping from the walls may shake some sense into her. Nothing against her as a person but her running for this office is just crazy. Seems desperate.

    1. Totally agree Anon., this just doesn't seem the right position for Ms. Khuri and I think voters will agree. She was well suited to the council position and did a good job, I think she was shunned within the local GOP leading to her defeat for re-election...Nothing against Mr. Scott either but a Coots as coroner is a local tradition...

    2. If memory serves only a police detective is required to show up at the scene of a natural/unnatural death...I know that's what you see on TV and perhaps it is the norm in other places ( or even here ) but that wasn't my experience as I remember it.

That said, Mr. Coots went above and beyond when my family needed his services and was more than accommodating to us as we dealt with some special issues...That has been more than appreciated and won't be forgotten.

    3. The coroner is supposed to "show up" to every death scene.

    4. A LOT of people show up...A coroner may have and I just don't remember...I do remember the detective, fire department, EMS, police, etc.

Edited to add: My husband thinks someone from the coroner's office did show-up...But I don't know.

    6. HT, could you provide some insight as to why you think Ms. Khuri has done a "good job" on the council?

    1. Agreed Dude both the Coots and Scotts have provided quality services for my family and the community for many years. We will be well served with either of these gentlemen as our county coroner...

On a side note I hope it will be many years before I need for them to provide me their services...

  4. Mrs. Khuri does have experience in this field. She has worked for a funeral director in the past. That, combined with her experience on council, earns my vote.

    1. Could you please give some details on this past experience? How long did she work for a funeral director? What were her duties? How many years ago?

  5. There is required training that covers all the nuts and bolts anyone doing the job needs to know.

Kelly would have the required training. She too has a funeral home background. The desire to act in the best interest of the citizens and with integrity that Kelly has exhibited on the council will be brought to this new role, and Kelly's immense capacity for compassion, which I've personally experienced and appreciated, will be a wonderful gift as coroner.

    2. That's fine. All that was just for the non-assholes with legitimate concerns as they make their ballot decisions anyway.

    3. There's a libertarian for you. Turns to insults and profanity because someone states facts that they don't like.

Btw, if you want to see what I was talking about for Curran's obstructive nature, look at the thread on CCC about minor league baseball.

  6. You can always tell Curran by her childish side step of her insults.

  7. Lol at the above. I prefer "youthful" blah, blah, blah rather than "childish," but you just keep on doing you.

I came to this thread to say this:

I am for Kelly and think she would be the best choice.

However, after reading the N&T profile of this race and seeing the comments from the candidates, I'm reassured that of all the races on my ballot, this is one that will be won by an able and compassionate individual regardless of the outcome.
