Big Brother (Jeff City Council) Says "No Camping "

Big Brother is alive and well and in operation in Jeffersonville. With the new ordinance the Jeffersonville City Council declared camping outside in the backyard is illegal in Jeffersonville and subject to arrest if you don't move after being warned. That's right police have the right to run in little Johnny and his friends if they don't have the required written permission from property owners. That's right again this new ordinance applies to PRIVATE property as well as public parks....

Illegal
Of course I'm being facetious about the kiddies, the intent and main target is the homeless people of southern Indiana. The Council has made it perfectly clear they don't want homeless people hanging around their shiny, new Big Four Landing Park. Lord forbid if someone walking from Louisville will see a homeless person. This is the same council/zoning board that nixed a day camp/shelter for the homeless in downtown Jeff earlier, unwilling to make a zoning change that would allow the shelter to exist in what is a now and has been a vacant building.
Lawbreakers

Come on Jeffersonville have a little heart...what are these people to do ??? Disappear...

What's next requiring proof of residency to enter public parks ??? .....We wouldn't be surprised.

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU !!!

Note **** Congratulations to Zach Payne for being the only council member with the balls enough to vote against this ordinance..Zach has proved on several occasions to be a wise voice on a some what dimwitted City Council...
Lisa Gill, Matt Owen, Nathan Samuel, Bryan Glover surprised that you wouldn't vote common sense on this issue....
As for the other "Four Stooges" on the Council they are predictable .....

  1. I wonder how the private property provision would stand up in a court of law. If there is no disturbances of neighbors what people do on their own property is their business.

Once again government stepping on people's rights.

  2. The private property provisions probably wouldn't stand up in a court of law, but the homeless are unlikely to lawyer up. People generally and poor people especially don't know their rights and are too intimidated to assert them if they do. All it will take is being told it is illegal for most seeking shelter to move on and especially for otherwise compassionate and willing property owners to be nervous about providing shelter. It's one thing to let someone down on their luck to quietly stay in your garage while they get back on their feet. It's another to envision blue lights in the alley because of it.

The provision to provide warning and attempt to provide assistance if needed sounds good, but I have no idea how the ordinance's author thinks that is going to happen given that the police force is already stretched too thin and our social service agencies overburdened. There are no on-call social workers. Good luck getting Exit 0 or other advocates to help enforce a law they oppose.

  3. Homelessness is a serious and polarizing issue. My problem is the same body (City Council) was given at least a partial solution to this problem. They (Council /Zoning board) had the opportunity to rezone the old JJ's video building for a shelter/ day camp for the homeless, but led by councilman (Spineless) Mike Smith the rezoning was denied.

The building is in a inconspicuous part of downtown right where a lot of homeless people congregate, a perfect location. Instead the City would rather harass these people who have no place to go. When in effect it is a problem they (council) created by their own inaction ....we have a few on the council who have this smug attitude toward the homeless and acted like the cowards they are by not even working with the homeless task force that they created to supposedly work with them.....

    Cowards and hypocrites....

  4. It is a shame that when the City has something shiny and new-the new park and walking bridge, they attempt to hide and in this case possibly jail the homeless to keep them away from the public. The homeless have always hung out in this area but now with people coming over the bridge the City looks for a way to eradicate them,
    Shame on you City council

  5. Hopefully I will come into some major money. If so I will buy a huge plot of property and let every swinging Richard pitch a pup tent, etc., in my yard. Hell, I may even invite an outlaw motorcycle group or two. I would hire Marilyn Manson to play a couple of shows. We may even have a gay marriage. I would feed the poor for the entire metro area. I would then sue the city for a violation of civil rights if my guests were arrested.

  7. It's the same old story about the homeless everyone says they are sympathetic to their plight, unless it comes down to opening a shelter or having them congregating in their neighborhood's. Then it's how do we get rid of them.

That's exactly what the city leaders have done, they created the task force creating a smoke screen of sympathy but their real intentions are how do we get rid of them. This ordinance is proof of their real mind set.

  9. These are lost souls the homeless that most people consider without rights. Only good people like Paul from exit 0 fight for them but like the last poster said there is little sympathy when they come to the area you reside in.

  10. I hope all these people volunteer occasionally with the homeless. Get to know their names and faces, their stories. See how Paul gives them TOUGH LOVE! He is not a pushover! He does not allow them to take take take without giving back.

Exit 0 is a ministry everyone should support and help however possible. The Stensruds have a heart for Jesus that loves the least of these, and wants to help get them back on their feet - not just feed them for a day.
